The Book of Matthew
The Book of Matthew is the first book in the New Testament. As you study, you'll notice that when Matthew begins his Gospel, he does so by tracing the genealogy of Jesus to Abraham, a man of faith. This establishes faith as the basis of the New Covenant that Jesus would bring. By studying this book, you can have a better understanding and appreciation for how our Christian faith is linked to the faith of Abraham, with whom God first established His Covenant.
Matthew was a Jew, a son of Abraham and of the Old Testament Covenant before the birth of Jesus. He wrote about Jesus in a way that Israel, God’s covenant people, could start with Abraham and trace through the generations to Jesus’ birth and life. Their they see that Jesus is the Son of the Living God, the long-awaited Messiah that Abraham, by faith, had foreseen coming to His people.
Matthew's account of the Sermon on the Mount reveals the principles behind the beloved guidelines and the Ten Commandments, under the Law of Moses. It is by these principles that we can live our faith. Finally, and very importantly, one of the most notable things in the book of Matthew is Jesus, born under the Old Covenant, restoring miracles to it, and showing us that if God did such mighty miracles under the Old Covenant, how much more would He do miracles under the New Covenant that Jesus would bring into being through His sacrificial death on the cross!
